One of the most acclaimed anime in history is the sprawling space opera Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Based on a series of science fiction novels from the 1980s, the franchise is often compared to the likes of Mobile Suit Gundam, albeit without the mecha elements. In 2018, the anime adaptation of the series was rebooted in the form of Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These.

That reboot is now returning this fall with a fourth season, though it's continuing a rather unconventional trend started by previous entries. About to premiere through one of the top anime streaming platforms, Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These - Intrigue is the next part of the highly influential anime's newest incarnation.

The Plot of Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These - Intrigue

The franchise's overarching premise involves the conflict between the Galactic Empire and Free Planets Alliance. Fighting a seemingly endless battle, the two sides both continue to gain tactical victories and suffer devastating defeats. The main protagonists are Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li, representing the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance.

Both of these great men value the will of their people, opposing the governments that seem more interested in using them as pawns. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is known for its strong characters, with both sides portrayed as being made of relatable, understandable and fleshed out characters. Season 4 will pick up after Season 3's conclusion, wherein a Galactic Empire fleet tried to mount a takeover of the Iserlohn corridor.

Trailer for Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These - Intrigue

The most recent trailer for the fourth season of Legend of the Galactic Heroes showcases tons of space action and dogfights, though the main focus is the drama being experienced by the many characters. Some of these cast members include new versions of the franchise's classic characters, including Adrian Rubinsky.

The two sides' fortresses are shown on a veritable collision course, with conspiracies and turmoil brewing amid this danger. This includes a young emperor, who's apparently taken away from home and thrown into the conflict between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance.

Production News for Legend of the Galactic Heroes Season 4

The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These reboot began production in 2017, with the anime handled by studio Production I.G. (most known for shows and movies such as The Sky Crawlers and different entries in the Ghost in the Shell franchise). Season 1 was released as a typical 12 episodes, but its follow-ups would buck this trend. Starting with "second season" Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These - Stellar War, the show was continued with sets of "movies" that combined multiple episodes into one feature.

This continued in Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These - Clash, which released earlier in 2022, and now in Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These - Intrigue, the series' fourth season. The cast from the previous seasons will return, namely Kenichi Suzumura, Mamoru Miyano, Yuichiro Umehara and Aya Endo as Yang Wen-li, Reinhard von Lohengramm, Siegfried Kircheis and Frederica Greenhill, respectively.
